- Summary
Verbal warning
Verbally advise the employee of his/her shortcomings. The verbal warning should be given in private to the employee. Preferably in front of a witness such as the employee's supervisor. The verbal warning should be recorded, a copy given to the employee and a copy put in the employee's file. The warning should briefly state the nature of the misconduct.
Also advise the employee that you are calling a meeting to discuss these shortcomings. This meeting provides the employee with an opportunity to arrange a support person, have their say and give any excuses (this is required by law).
